In this sense, there are two types of systems: on-grid and off-grid.

On-grid systems are those that use the electrical grid from your utility provider as their battery bank. The energy that is not consumed immediately after being produced by your system is fed to the grid and accounted in your favor. This way, at night when your system does not produce (because there is no sun), you take the needed energy from the utility grid.

Off-grid systems are those that are not connected to the utility grid and that use batteries to store the energy produced by the solar panels. In this case, the batteries supply your backup power at night or during very cloudy days.

The inverter is frequently considered the brain of the system. Is the piece of equipment that converts energy in such a way that it can actually be used in your home or office, or fed to the grid. It converts direct current electricity (DC) into alternating current electricity (AC) and synchronizes its frequency with the one from the grid.

The typical lifetime of a solar panel is approximately 30 years. The majority of panels are guaranteed for 25 – 30 years to function at 85% of their original capacity. Their performance will depend on the quality of the technology and the quality of the installation. This means that your panels could work for a long time after the first 25 years have gone by.
